Why there is a payment charge when parents pay online
When a parent pays school fees online, a small payment charge is added on top. Here is what it is for, where parents see it before paying, and why your school always gets the full fee.
When a parent pays school fees online with edunile, by card, bank transfer or USSD, a small payment charge is added on top of the fee. Your school still receives the full amount of the bill. The charge is paid by the parent, on top.
You can forward this page to any parent who asks about it.
What the charge is for
Every online payment passes through a payment partner that moves the money safely from the parent's bank to your school's bank account. The payment partner charges a fee for every payment. The payment charge covers that fee, and the cost of running online payments for your school: the payment page, the instant receipt, and the record that updates your fees list the moment a parent pays.
Parents see it before they pay
Nobody meets the charge as a surprise. On the payment page a parent opens from their bill, they see three lines before they tap Pay:
- the bill, or the part of it they are paying now;
- the Payment charge;
- You pay, the total.
The payment partner's own page then shows the exact total again before the parent confirms. After paying, the receipt shows what went towards the bill and the payment charge on separate lines.
See the charge on a parent's payment
If a parent asks what they paid, you can show them the same receipt they got.
Open the class
Open Finance from your dashboard menu. On the Payments tab, tap the child's class.
Open the child's bill
Find the child in the list and tap their bill.
View the receipt
Tap View Receipt. Under the amount paid towards the bill you will see the Payment charge on its own line, and the total the parent paid.
Your school always gets the full fee
The charge is never taken out of the school's money. If a bill is ₦100,000, your school receives ₦100,000, and the charge is on top of that.
The charge is also kept out of every figure you work with. Your collection totals, balances, collection rate and reports only ever count what was paid towards bills.
Paying without the charge
The charge only applies to online payments made through the payment page. A parent who pays at the school office in cash, by bank transfer straight into the school's account, or on the school's POS pays no payment charge. You record that payment yourself, and the bill updates the same way. See Record a payment made in cash or by transfer.
Common issues
- A parent says they were charged more than the bill
That is the payment charge. Their receipt shows it on its own line, under the amount paid towards the bill. The bill itself was credited with exactly what it said.
- The amount on the bill and on the payment page are different
The bill shows the school fee. The payment page adds the payment charge and shows the total as You pay, so the two will always differ by the charge.
- Can the school pay the charge instead of the parent?
Not at the moment. The charge is always added to what the parent pays online, so that your school receives the full fee every time.
