Set up classes and subjects from a template
Create every class and subject your school runs in one go, from the standard list for your type of school. edunile shows you exactly what it will add before it saves anything, and never touches what you already have.
When you signed up, edunile set up the class names for the type of school you chose: Nursery 1 to Nursery 3, Primary 1 to 6, JSS 1 to SS 3, and so on. Classes and subjects are a different matter: a class is a class name plus a section, like JSS 1A, and it is where students actually sit. Rather than creating twenty of those one at a time, you can set them all up at once from the Sessions & terms page. This takes about five minutes.
Everything on this page is add-only. edunile shows you a preview of what it is about to create, marks anything that already exists as kept, and only writes when you confirm. Nothing is ever renamed, removed or reordered by these buttons, so it is safe to run them again later, for example when your school adds a Nursery section.
Steps
Open the Classes & Subjects tab
In the sidebar, open Academics, then click Sessions & terms, and click the Classes & Subjects tab. It has three cards: Class Names, Classes & subjects, and Classroom Sections (Arms).
Check your class names, and add a stage if one is missing
Look at the Class Names card. It lists the classes students apply into and move through, lowest first. These are the names parents see on your public application form.
If a whole stage is missing (a primary school that has just opened a nursery, say), click Set up from template, tick the stages your school runs, and click Preview. edunile lists every class name it would add, marked New, and every one you already have, marked Already exists · kept. Click Add … class names to confirm, or Back to change your selection.
If you only need one extra name, click Add class name instead, type the name and a short code (for example Year 7 and Y7), and click Add. It goes in after your highest class.
Open Set up classes & subjects
In the Classes & subjects card, click Set up classes & subjects. A dialog opens with:
- Average class size: used as the capacity of each class you create. You can change any single class afterwards.
- Class arms: the sections each class is split into, separated by commas. Type
A, Bfor JSS 1A and JSS 1B,Gold, Silverfor JSS 1 Gold and JSS 1 Silver, or leave it blank for one class per name. - Pick the classes you offer: one chip for each of your class names. Click a chip to make classes for it; edunile makes one per arm.
- Default subjects: the standard subjects for your type of school. Click each one you teach, or type your own in the box below and click Add. Every subject you tick is offered in every class you create here.
Click a class chip to rename it, or the small number beside it to change that class's capacity.
Preview, then confirm
Click Preview. edunile shows what will change: each class marked New or Already exists · kept, each subject the same way (a subject you typed that matches one you already have is shown as reused as …), plus how many sections and subject offerings it will add. Nothing has been saved yet.
Click Back if you want to change anything. Your choices are kept. Click Confirm and create when it looks right. The dialog then tells you what was created and offers Open Classes so you can put a teacher in charge of each one.
Put a teacher in charge of each class
Go to Academics → Classes. Each new class appears as a card. Click Edit on a card to pick its class teacher, then open the class and use its Academics tab to pick the teacher for each subject. The classes guide covers this in detail.
Common issues
- Preview says every class already exists
You have run this before, or the classes were created during sign-up. That is fine: nothing will be duplicated. Click Back and tick only the class names you still need, or close the dialog and add the odd class from Academics → Classes.
- I can't see the class name I want in the chips
The chips are your Class Names from the card above. Close the dialog, add the missing name there (Add class name or Set up from template), then open Set up classes & subjects again.
- The suggested subjects are wrong for my school
The list is only a starting point. Untick anything you don't teach and type your own subjects in the box below the list. They are saved with everything else. To change the subjects a single class offers afterwards, open that class and use its Academics tab.
- I made a class by mistake
From Academics → Classes, click Edit on the card. A class with no students can be deleted with the bin icon; one that already has records can be archived instead, which hides it without losing anything.
